The Frisian Wehde is a special holiday area in the district of Friesland, on the North Sea. It comprises of the three villages of Bockhorn, Zetel and Neuenburg.
In the north-east, the Frisian Wehde adjoins to the Jade Bay (North Sea) and to the South a wonderful heath and moorland forms the border to the Ammerland district.
"Wehde" is an old Low-German meaning for the forest and thus an indication of what forms the center of this region: the unique Neuenburger primeval forest. It has ancient and primal trees. The oldest giant in the forest is 850 years old (picture on the left, this oak tree actually tilted over on 6th June 2014)[Link only in German language]).
Recreation is very important in the Frisian Wehde. Enjoy the beautiful Frisian countryside with picturesque villages. The heath, the primeval swamp, the forest, the wide wet land, high and low tides, the unforgettable North German sky, shimmering streams, surging grain fields, remnants of old monastery courtyards, hedges, fences, old farmsteads but also modern residential areas, restaurants and dining places and lounges for linger.
The many well-signposted cycling and hiking paths (a node system with special cards) will make you want to do plenty of cycling or relaxing walks.
There is much to discover in Bockhorn, for example, the St. Cosmas and Damian Church which dominates the market place or in the summer months the water park with a heated pool, water slide and mini golf. On the web pages of Naturerlebnis Südliches Friesland (Southern Frisia) you can get a comprehensive overview of the many attractions in the area (Apologies, but the web pages are available in German only).
After your extensive tours you can simply relax and dangle your soul on our sun terrace or relax in our sauna or whirlpool.
Or after a day on the beach in Dangast, perhaps connected with a boat trip on the Etta von Dangast to the Arngaster Lighthouse [Link is in German only], you enjoy the stunning sunset at the Jade Bay.
